2006 Wing Ding Motorcycle Rally Blog - Day 1

This year I'm publishing highlights of the 2006 Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) Wing Ding rally, day by day in a blog. Wing Ding was scheduled for July 3-6 this year. The blog will also include my preparation in getting ready to take the ride to Nashville, TN and my observations while there.

From the Wing Ding Web site:

"For the first time in GWRRA’s history, Wing Ding, the world’s largest Gold Wing party and trade show, will ride into Music City, USA and celebrate its 28th anniversary in Nashville, Tennessee, July 3-6, 2006."

My wife, Jane, and I will be riding our trikes with members of GWRRA NJ Chapter F, known as F-Troop. 47 members of F-Troop will be attending Wing Ding. Many of these members will be making their own riding plans for the trip. Two formal groups have been organized. We will be part of the first group consisting of three bikes, two trikes, one sidecar rig, and "three-chicks-in-a-van." The latter are three non-riding women. The second group consists of five 2-up couples taking a 2-day ride to Nashville. They will be leaving Saturday.

Packing for this trip, which also includes a follow-on trip to the BuRP rally, was difficult space-wise. I can see why so many riders are now pulling trailers. Also, I had to find room for OB-1, the third one of our forum traveling knapsacks. I was supposed to pass OB-1 on to another forum member and keep him traveling. Alas, I failed. I never found time to make a hand-off so I'm bringing him back to BuRP where I will find a suitable hand-off to another forum member.

Writing these blog entries can sometimes take 1-2 hours in the evening. My F-Troop chapter is expecting all its members to meet every evening for snacks and laughs. I may have to make an appearance and then head back and get to work on the blog. Only so many hours in the day.

We've been having some very bad weather here on the East Coast. Many areas around me are flooded. No telling what we will encounter on our first 288 mile leg to Cumberland, MD. At any rate, we will be on the trikes just before 7:30 a.m. tomorrow to meet up with the group at a WaWa convenience store about 12 miles from here. I'll let you know on Friday night what happened.
