Motorcycle Tip - Know Your Bike So You Can Fix It Blindfolded

Here's a Motorcycle Tip from forum member, HGAL3.

Coming down the Saddle Road last night, it was a Beeeeuuuutiful ride. Brilliant stars dusting the sky, opalescent cloud parting before me, when suddenly everything went black, with a gentle amber glow. I tried to stay on the road as I remembered it, and came to a stop (no traffic behind me, thank goodness), eased off to the side of the road, barely visible in the glow of the running lights. Stopped and climbed off. Flashlight battery was dead.

Managed to pull off the side cover and change the fuse by feel (main fuse is number 1, whole bike would be out. Is headlamp 2 or 3? It was 2.) Swapped fuses, light came back on. No problem. Well, OK, it may take a while for the wrinkle in the middle of the saddle to flatten out.

Lessons learned:

  • Stuff happens. Know your bike like the back of your hand. That might be the only reference material you have available some day.

  • Be sure your flashlight is always in good working order.

  • Fix loose wires, broken things, etc. as soon as you see them. Otherwise they can cause other problems at bad times.
