Motorcycle Tip - How to Keep Your Bike From Being Stolen

Here's a Motorcycle Tip from various forum members.

from TEvo:

  • Never leave your bike unattended in questionable/high threat areas. If in doubt, don't park it there.

  • Out of sight, out of mind. A good bike cover if you must leave your bike outside or have no garage (as it is in my case). This simple piece of equipment not only protects your bike from the environment but also from prying eyes.

  • Secure the bike to a solid, immovable object using the heftiest locking device you can find/carry. Supplement with an alarm system if you wish.

  • Simple deterrents like disc locks and what not are a last resort. Typically, only useful in lower threat areas or when you cannot lug that 15-lb New York Chain and lock around.

from SUPERSY:

  • A handlebar lock (that's built into the bike usually) will ward off opportunistic thieves and drunks. (Free)

  • A bike cover will prevent vandalism; also, thieves will be less motivated if they can't see what your bike is.

  • A disk lock will ward off thieves with a flathead and a hammer. (I personally recommend the beeping one from Xena to save yourself some accidents.)

  • A heavy duty chain, if used to chain bike to fixed objects, will ward off thieves who were planning to lift your bike onto a truck and take off. You can also park your bike where it is not really accessible.

  • I believe only constant supervision will stop a determined thief from stealing your bike. In such cases, maybe theft insurance is the only hope.

  • Other methods that I've heard of are (1) keeping the bike really dirty and (2) making sure there is a more attractive bike with less security close to yours.

from GLOBALRIDER:

Consider a high end motorcycle alarm system that dials your cell phone number when the alarm has been tripped. The alarm system should also have a battery back-up.

from PANTABLO:

At home, I park my bike in an uncovered parking space off the alley in back. I cover mine and lock it to a steel ring I shot into the concrete, looping my 6' cable through the frame, front wheel, cover grommet (don't want that stolen!) and lock it to the ring in the concrete with a u-lock. Only takes a couple of minutes to remove/install.
