2. Sturgis:

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally held at Sturgis, South Dakota is scheduled for August 8-14, 2016. In fact, this is the 76th annual rally. My book, 50 Wild Motorcycle Tales, has two stories about Sturgis. For the Newsletter, I'm using my article about Sturgis and I'm including a quick link to the Sturgis Webcam trained on Main Street and other areas so you can see what's going on during the rally.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally® attracts hundreds of thousands of motorcycle riders to Sturgis®, SD each August to be part of one of the biggest motorcycle rallies on the planet.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists head toward, what many feel, is the motorcycling mecca of the world, Sturgis®, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally® in South Dakota. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally® takes place this year August 8-14. The links, below, should enable you to check out the various items mentioned in this article about the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally®. Several Web sites seem to want to be the "official" Sturgis Motorcycle Rally® site and some of these sites are often incomplete or have bad links.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally® began in 1938 by a small group of Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club members to bring a few tourists into town. J. C. "Pappy" Hoel was one of the founders of this event which began as the Black Hills Motor Classic. The name was changed to Sturgis Rally and Races in 1992 to reflect the fact that the event was known world-wide as Sturgis and that racing was always a part of the rally since its inception.

Currently, the event is known as the Sturgis® Rally or Sturgis Motorcycle Rally®. What's in a name?

The Sturgis® Rally has grown over the years. In 1938 only a few people watched the local races. By 1940, 5000 spectators watched the races. During World War II, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally® was cancelled for two years. In 1981 there were 25,000 riders coming to Sturgis® ; in 1987, 63,000; 1997 saw 220,000; and in 1998 over 360,000 people attended the Sturgis® rally. The size of the crowd sometimes depends on any special significance that might be placed on the event. You may notice me waving in the center of the picture at the top of this article. It was taken at the 1993 Sturgis rally.

This event is not confined to the town of Sturgis® that has a population of 6000 during the rest of the year. It's spread all over the area. Most people cannot find a motel room unless they book a year in advance so many go to the numerous camp grounds. The Buffalo Chip Campground is the most famous. You can even check out the message boards for the Buffalo Chip. People take rooms and camp out up to 100 miles away from the Sturgis® rally. In fact, you cannot ride anywhere within a 100 mile radius of Sturgis® and not be literally surrounded by motorcycles. Especially be sure to check out the town of Deadwood, where Wild Bill Hickok was killed in a local saloon. Deadwood is now mostly known for its gambling casinos and slot machines in every store. You can also visit Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, Devil's Tower, and of course, don't miss Wall Drug Store -- the signs won't let you.

3. Picture Galleries of Harleys, Indians, and BMW Motorcycles:

I am featuring three of my motorcycle galleries. Each of these galleries was created so we could view one model for each year. Unfortunately, there are many blank pictures for each gallery.

Please, if you have one of these missing bikes, send me a picture and description so we can complete the galleries.

Harley-Davidson began selling motorcycles in 1903. In 2003, the Motor Company celebrated its 100th anniversary. We present here a picture gallery of Harley-Davidson motorcycle models over these 100 years as provided by visitors to this site.

A picture gallery, "100 Years of Harley-Davidson," is provided that gives a picture and description for each model year from 1903 to 2003. These years have been expanded to the current year. Harley-Davidson motorcycle picture

Indian motorcycle pictures are presented from the first prototype model in 1901 to the present. These Indian motorcycle pictures are submitted by Motorcycle Views visitors.

Indian began making motorcycles in 1901 as the Hendee Manufacturing Company. The first production model was in 1902 and 143 units were produced. In 1903 376 motorcycles were sold. It continued production through 1953 when it no longer made the classic Indian. In 1999 Indian motorcycles were again produced, this time by the Indian Motorcycle Corporation. This was not the same company but it did have rights to the Indian name and trademarks. Indian motorcycle picture

A motorcycle picture gallery called "58 Years of Indian Motorcycles" is provided that gives a picture and description for each model year from 1901 to 2003. These years have been expanded to the current year.

We present here BMW motorcycle pictures of BMW models from 1923 over 81 years of production. These BMW motorcycle pictures were submitted by Motorcycle Views visitors.

BMW began selling motorcycles long before any BMW automobiles were even thought of. A BMW motorcycle picture gallery called "81 Years of BMW" is provided that gives a picture and description for each model year from 1923 to 2003. These years have been expanded to the current year.

Now it's true that after World War II, BMW was in a rebuilding period and did not produce any motorcycles for 1945-1947 and only 59 for 1948. So, there will be no pictures for those years unless you happen to have one of the rare 1948 models. BMW motorcycle picture

There are still many years in these three galleries without a picture. That's where you come in. We want you to help us celebrate the longevity of Harley-Davidson, Indian, and BMW as they continue to produce motorcycles and generate loyal fans. There will only be one picture for each year placed in these galleries. Since I am continually reviewing the best picture for each year, new submissions for a year already listed may bump the current picture.

Note that the galleries have been expanded to bring the models to the current year. The names of the galleries will remain the same.

8. My Four Motorcycle Books:

I hope you will take a look at my four motorcycle books, available in paperback and Kindle editions on Amazon.com. These books make great, inexpensive gifts. In fact, you can purchase all four for less than $30 total. I have reduced the price of my four Kindle editions to $0.0 (FREE) IF you also first purchase the corresponding paperback edition. That way you can always have the book with you if you have a tablet or smartphone with you. None of the paperbacks has color pictures in them owing to the high price of producing a book with color. However, every Kindle edition has color pictures, so the Getting Started Riding a Motorcycle and Motorcycle Haiku Poetry Kindle books are in full color.

My latest book (released December 1, 2015), Motorcycle Kick-Starts, also available on Amazon.com in paperback, Kindle, and audiobook (Audible) editions, contains a condensed view of motorcycling for new and returning riders. It's designed to whet your appetite for more while sticking to basic motorcycle information without overpowering you with details. The book starts out telling you what motorcycles are and showing you how you might learn to become an active, safe rider. Then ten short motorcycle stories, written by actual motorcyclists, are presented. These stories allow you to observe some unusual things that happen to people who ride motorcycles. Between stories, some practical advice about motorcycles is given in the form of ten motorcycle How-Tos and ten motorcycle Tips that you will need to know to become a proficient rider. Click the book cover to learn how to buy it on Amazon.com. NEW! As of March 10, 2016, there is now an Audible audiobook version of Motorcycle Kick-Starts. You can get it on Amazon, Audible, or iTunes.

My book, 50 Wild Motorcycle Tales, contains a collection of stories that originally were only available on my website. Fifty of these stories were selected, intensively edited, and compiled into the book. I wrote five of the stories. The book is available on Amazon in paperback, Kindle, and audiobook (Audible) editions. Click the book cover to learn how to buy it on Amazon.com. The Audible edition is also available for immediate download on iTunes and Audible.

My book, Getting Started Riding a Motorcycle, was first published in 2011 but only as a Kindle edition. It was revised in 2014 and also made available in a paperback edition. Click the book cover to learn how to buy it on Amazon.com.

My book, Motorcycle Haiku Poetry, also available on Amazon.com in both paperback and Kindle editions, contains haiku poems about motorcycles. Haiku is a simple poem of three lines with five syllables in the first and last lines and seven in the second line. Each of the nearly 60 poems is coupled with a motorcycle picture and description related to the poem. I wrote seven of the haiku poems. Click the book cover to learn how to buy it on Amazon.com.

9. Here are some very popular articles on the Motorcycle Views Site. Take a look:

10. Newsletter is Now Monthly:

When I started issuing newsletters at About.com in 1999, they were weekly. When my four forums got very popular, I added a second weekly forum-only newsletter. That meant I was doing two newsletters each week.

When I started Motorcycle Views, I issued one weekly newsletter. That continued for a while until I decided to stop sending the newsletter.

Some more time passed and I restarted the newsletter every two weeks.

Then I started writing motorcycle books. So far, I've finished four books, each with a Kindle edition and a paperback edition. I even did two of the books in Audible audiobook editions. I'm currently working on two more books, one a memoir.

I'm finding it more and more difficult to continue delivering a newsletter every two weeks. It just takes up too much time.

So, I will be sending out the Motorcycle Views Newsletter once a month on the first Sunday of the month. Of course, you can always visit my site any time to check out what's going on.

11. Newsletter Archive:

I now have a Motorcycle Views Newsletter Archive to store all my newsletters. The archive gives the year, month, day, and subject for each newsletter. Each newsletter contains many links to the Motorcycle Views website. A link to the archive will also be included on the Home page of the site and on the page where users can join the newsletter list.

14. Polar Bear Grand Tour Best Pictures and Videos for the 2015-2016 Season:

While we wait for the 2016-2017 Polar Bear Grand Tour to begin in late October 2016, here are my best pictures and videos of the 2015-2016 Polar Bear Grand Tour season.

See the Best Pictures and Videos of the 2015-2016 Polar Bear Grand Tour season.

The Polar Bears consist of 550 riders from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Delaware, who ride each Sunday to a different prescribed destination where they sign-in and receive points. There is, usually, a restaurant at or near the destination. It gets cold, windy, and snowy on these rides. I've been a Polar Bear member for nearly 25 years, and I built and continue to maintain their website.

The picture to the right was taken at the Cape May, NJ VFW.

15. Help Grow Motorcycle Views:
