Wild Motorcycle Tales

Here's a great story from joe2wheels. Got your own story? Send it to me.

Truckers and Tunnels

In August 2003, I was enjoying the early morning ride on one of those beautiful mountain roads in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This was a narrow 2-lane road with steep inclines, hairpin turns and switchbacks.

I would have felt very comfortable betting large sums of money that you would never see an 18-wheeler here.

Close to the top of the mountain, I came to a stop behind a long line of cars. Up ahead was a narrow tunnel and sitting in front of the tunnel, blocking the road, was an 18-wheeler.

Traffic from both directions was at a complete stand still.

The truck driver was standing on the side of the road with the biggest OH SHIT look on his face that a human being could possibly have.

This guy knew he wasn't just fired, he was f****** dead! The clearance sign above the tunnel said 11 ft. and he had 13 ft. of tractor/trailer that wasn't going anywhere.

He wasn't going through the tunnel, and he damn sure wasn't going to be backing down that road.

How in the hell did he even get that rig up there? That had to be an incredible feat of driving.

People were standing around taking pictures and making crude jokes about truck drivers. Some guy was hollering, "Hey moron, just let some air out of the tires?"

Talk about some pissed off folks. Motorcycles had just enough room to squeeze past the truck and get through the tunnel, so I was on my way in a fairly short amount time.

I have often thought of that trucker and his ridiculous dilemma. It would probably have been worth it to have stayed there for whatever amount of time it took to see how in the world they ever got that truck out of there. Any ideas?
