Wild Motorcycle Tales

Here's a great story from edeee2. Got your own story? Send it to me.

The Storm

It was a beautiful Saturday morning. Beautiful clear blue sky, no clouds in sight. I sat on my porch having my morning coffee. I was listening to my Walkman (with speakers) to the news and weather. Over and over they told of this wonderful beautiful day. I looked up and three bikes were parking in my yard.

The bikes belonged to three friends whom I ride with as much as possible. We were all friends for many years. Kat asked, "Any more coffee?" Yes I tell her. She brings three cups out. We drink and talk about how wonderful this day is. Then the dreaded topic of "what are we gonna do today" comes up.

As in too many conversations, "no, we did that two weeks ago" is a common response. Several suggestions are made. Then after the second pot of coffee is finished, we agree upon a place to ride to: the casinos along the Ohio river in Indiana. We can gamble, eat, then enjoy an evening ride home. Maybe even stop for a cold refreshment or two.

Before we leave we all agree: "No interstates. Just back roads."

About a little more than half way there, we spot an entrance to the interstate. Without any logic, the guy in the lead swings onto the interstate.

This section of the interstate has scattered traffic. So, no problem, other than we just did not want to ride the concrete road. On we went, smooth going.

After about 10-12 miles, the guy in the lead starts waving his hand and arm pointing at the sky ahead of us. NOW WHERE IN THE HELL this big black cloud came from, we don't know since we were so engrossed in a beautiful ride. The big black monster just suddenly appeared. I'm still not sure if it attacked us or our inattention caused us to ride into it. We stopped under an overpass. Almost instantly, it was upon us.

The wind gave several very strong gusts. It was scary. Maybe a tornado? We got up under the bridge and took cover. We felt safe and we were. The wind was short lived. Then a light rain. That turned into small hail. Then bigger hail.

One of the girls got her camera out of her bag. She was down on the edge of the road with her helmet on taking pictures of the storm and hail. She stepped too close and got several golf ball sized hail stones on her helmet. Good thing she had her hard hat on. Two or three got her on the arm leaving nice big bruises.

Just as quickly as the storm got us, it disappeared. Sun and clear sky followed. Hail on the road melted quickly and soon the sun dried the pavement. Off we went to the casinos.

We gambled. Not enough money won to brag about. Hit the smorgasbord and pigged out. We had a very wonderful and uneventful ride home.

We have taken this trip several more times but luck has been with us. No more bad weather. -- edeee2
