Wild Motorcycle Tales Here's a great story from Rick Tilbury. Got your own story? Send it to me. Never Seen Rain Mister! I ride to live; I live to ride. When I'm not riding, I'm thinking about riding. Reading the classifieds section of motorcycles for sale, I've seen ads in which the seller informs the potential buyer that the motorcycle has never been ridden in the rain and has always been stored in the garage. I smile to myself, because an Old Iron Butt Rider like me could never make such a claim. I've ridden all of my bikes in the rain. When I do, I just power wash the bike, wipe it down, wax the paint, and polish the chrome obsessively. Like a good woman, I take care of my '03. Yeah, we are in love, and we've seen a little rain. Riding in the inclement weather is a result of fate as much as choice. Once the ride has started, I'm not going to let a little rain bring an end to our time together. Our resolve has been tested more than a few times by the rain. And, I can assure you sir, I've ridden in the rain enough to know that I don't like it! Give me a woman who can two-up, put her rain gear on, and ride in the rain without complaining, and I will introduce you to the woman I'm in love with. Because she is the navigator and takes care of the reservations during the ride, I will cherish and adore this woman forever. Yes sir! The '03 and I have ridden some long distances together. We heard about this club called the Iron Butt Association. The only way into the club is to ride your way in with the shortest qualifying distance being 1000 miles in 24 hours. It was a commitment, but, I thought that was cool.
I didn't know if I could do it, but I did and after a while, we also successfully rode for the BunBurner Gold, a ride covering 1500 miles in 24 hours. Like a long, satisfying love affair with a beautiful woman, the '03 and I have been enjoying our life together. We've been through some tough rides, but in the end our trust for one another has grown, and I'm about as happy as a man could ever be, the '03, my woman, and me. -- Rick Tilbury
