Wild Motorcycle Tales

Here's a great story from Carl. Got your own story? Send it to me.

Second Gear Wonder

You know how they say "He's a legend in his own mind?" Well, I guess I'm a biker in my own mind.

Back in the early '60s my two cousins and I were closer than the three musketeers, more like the three stooges.

We were visiting a friend in Oregonia, Ohio. He had a bike he wanted to sell so we went out to try it out. He lived up on top of a good size hill.

Leon was going to buy the bike so he got on and rode it around in an open area. It ran good. He said, "You want to ride it Jim?" Duh ... does a bear ride a bike in the woods? I had never been on a bike in my 15 years.

But that never stopped me. I got on the bike and after one minute of Bike 101, I was going around circles on the top of this big hill.

Somehow it got into 2nd gear and I was moving quicker than I could think. I was out of control and heading toward the side of the hill.

I didn't see my life flash before me but I did see Leon coming to my rescue. He caught me just in time to keep me from going into space. If the truth was known I think he was just worried that I was going to trash the bike that he was planning to buy.

My other cousin, Jody, just watched the melodrama with his eyeballs all bugged out. -- Carl
