Motorcycle User Reviews - 2006 BMW R1200RT

Motorcycle picture of a 2006 BMW R1200RT

After reading Rick's review on his 2002 BMW R1150RT, I felt compelled to review my 2006 BMW R1200RT.

First, I read the negative review but did not see mentioned exactly what the problem was with the bike. Rick does mention that it was a "prototype." I have found that it is not always a good idea to buy the first year model of anything, but that's just me. I figure, let them get the bugs out and then we'll see.

I have a friend who has a later model R1150RT (2004 or 2005) and he has somewhere around 50-60000 miles on it and from what I know, it has been extremely reliable. He does most of the Polar Bear Grand Tour rides and usually shows up with that bike. I know he too loves his RT.

Anyway, back to my review: I had a 2003 Sportster which after a few trips to Vermont and then a trip to Myrtle Beach and the Outer Banks, I decided that a touring bike would be in order. Three years and 20,000 miles later, I started looking.

I had always intended to get a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic, however, for some reason, decided to look at BMWs, particularly the 2006 R1200RT. The RT and the Ultra Classic were priced pretty much the same, however, there was no comparison with regard to features so the BMW won out. (Not to mention that there was no comparison on the handling of the two bikes.)

I now have approximately 27,000+ miles on the bike. It's been to all New England states accept Rhode Island, down Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway and to a total of twelve states. I can't say enough about how I feel about this machine. I've enjoyed it so much that I supplemented it with a 2009 BMW F800ST (review to come).

The RT is equipped with an electronically adjustable windshield (my favorite feature), cruise control, heated grips, Electronic Suspension Adjustment and an AM/FM radio with CD player. I also bought the top case which goes on and off when I need it, unlike many of the other touring bikes where you are stuck with the top case at all times. The side bags are also easily removed which pretty much turns the bike into a large sport bike. So basically, you have three bikes: a cruiser, a tourer and a sport bike.

The only criticism I have is the seat, however, I don't think I have ever owned a bike where the stock seat was ideal.

I will say one thing though. When it comes to accessories, BMW lives up to its reputation where the BMW stands for: Bring My Wallet

I love both of my BMWs and highly recommend them. If I had some money to burn, I'd be adding a K1300S to my garage but alas, we have to be realistic don't we? -- Tom Lombardini
