Motorcycle Recall - Panther Motors

NHTSA Campaign ID:  09V379000
Component:  Parking Brake
Manufacturer:  Panther Motors INC
Recall Date: 09/23/2009
Potential Number of Units Affected: 434
Manufactured:
Defect Summary:
Panther (Note: This is NOT the Panther Motorcycle Company. Panther Motors makes 3-wheeled trike-like vehicles.) is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 motorcycles (trikes). These motorcycles fail to conform with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 122, "Motorcycle Brake Systems." The standard requires a strictly mechanical form of engagement of a motorcycle parking brake, whereas the parking brake on these motorcycles relies in part on hydraulic pressure.
Consequence Summary:
In the event of a loss of hydraulic pressure through the loss of brake fluid, brake performance will degrade increasing the risk of crash.
Corrective Summary:
Panther will inspect and replace the necessary components free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact Panther at 954-682-3693.
